Overview
The Courtyard Montessori Preschool was set up in 1980 by a group of parents and educationalists determined to bring the choice of a Montessori education to Christchurch families.
The Courtyard is Christchurch's longest established Montessori preschool and is renowned for its excellence in education. The unique qualities of the environment, specially trained teachers and a highly effective Board of Trustees contribute to the long running success of the preschool.
An Incorporated Society, the Courtyard is run by a Board of Trustees made up of parents or caregivers of current pupils and the Principal. Our not-for-profit status means that all surpluses are invested back into the preschool.
There are two classrooms (each catering for 2½ to 6 year olds) and six permanent teachers employed. All teachers are Montessori-qualified and have Diplomas of Teaching in Early Childhood Education or are in the process of completing these qualifications. Low teacher/child ratios are always maintained.
Children's curiosities and horizons are expanded through exposure to a variety of stimulating Montessori and other materials. We recognise that each child is on his or her own individual path of development and therefore are free to select activities that correspond to their own periods of interest and readiness. Our interest is to find the unique potential that lies within each child.
One of the key strengths of the Courtyard is the involvement and support from parents in the life of the preschool. Parents are actively encouraged to participate in parent/child evenings, education evenings, school outings, social activities, fundraising and working bees.
